Curatorial Note

This large seated bronze by Armando Amaya is one of the most powerful works by the artist in the Braselton Art Gallery collection. Substantial in scale, richly patinated, and weighing 70.8 pounds, the sculpture carries the presence of a much larger monument while remaining intimate enough for interior display.

The figure sits with knees drawn upward, arms crossing naturally over the body, and the head turned in quiet contemplation. The pose creates a compact architectural form: grounded, balanced, and complete from every angle. From the front, the work is serene and direct; from the side, it becomes a study in mass and silhouette; from the rear, the sweeping back and shoulders reveal one of the sculpture’s strongest views, approaching abstraction without losing the humanity of the figure.

Amaya’s best work often depends on volume, restraint, and emotional stillness. This bronze succeeds on all three fronts. The face is individualized but not overly literal, the hands and feet are carefully resolved, and the surface carries a dark green-black patina that emphasizes both the weight of the form and the softness of the modeling. The result is a work that feels timeless rather than decorative.

The sculpture is signed, dated 2000, and numbered 1/7. It also bears the Carlos Rojas foundry mark from Mexico. As the first cast in a small edition of seven, and as one of Amaya’s larger seated female figures, this example stands well above the more commonly encountered smaller bronzes by the artist.

Provenance is also unusually strong. The work was purchased directly from Armando Amaya by the Haas family and later acquired by Braselton Art Gallery. That direct artist-to-family-to-gallery chain gives the sculpture a clean and compelling history.

For BAG, this is not simply an example of Amaya’s work. It is among the strongest Amaya bronzes the gallery has encountered: large, beautifully composed, excellent from all viewing angles, and especially well suited for pedestal presentation in a serious gallery setting.
